Late Night Trip to the Grocery Store -- A penny lurks

I was headed home last night from my son's house where I'd enjoyed time with two of my grandkids. We played several games of Wits and Wagers Family (fun, fun, fun!), made some Christmas candy (licked the bowl is more like it!), and generally had a great time!

Oh, and I need to announce my son's new Website, ParkGrades.com. Here is the blurb from his site:

ParkGrades.com offers the largest, most accurate directory of city parks in the United States! We're adding beaches and museums, too! The need for a site like ParkGrades is clear to any parent of young children. Ask a given parent about parks near them, and you'll have a good idea of what's out there. But ask that same parent if they know which park they'd recommend across town, across state, or across the country -- there's no great way to find that out! Until now.

Check it out! This weekend (and through Christmas Eve), they're giving away a prize a day. Just register, review a park or two, and sit back waiting to win! And enjoy a park if the weather permits.

I've been having a hankering for tacos so I stopped at Safeway to buy some ground beef and found a penny on the floor when I was checking out. Yay!

And today I ran out to run some errands, do some last minute shopping. I went to the Borders at the fancy schmanzy Biltmore Fashion Park (oh brother) and found a grungy penny on the brick walkway. Good enough for my found penny jar!

 Okay, went to Walmart and found 4 more pennies!

Are you ready for Christmas?

Why can't I find a dollar at the Dollar Tree? Oh well. I'll take this penny.

Found 2 Nickels at Fresh and Easy

Today as I was checking out at Fresh and Easy, I found these two nickels in the change tray. Woo hoo! Why do people leave money?

I've decided these might be some of the reasons:

  • I forgot it.
  • I didn't know I had change coming.
  • I don't do change.
Why do you think people would leave 10 cents behind?

Dime in the Driveway

On my way to the library today to return two movies I didn't watch, I found this dime in the driveway. This pushes my found money total for the year over the $10 mark! This is still a pittance when I hear about others who find paper money, and big paper money at that. Oh well, better than nothing is my motto.

Things I Saw on My Walk

The weather in Phoenix has been cooperating. That means the 100-degree days are gone (for a few months any way) and I'm able to get outside without fear of fainting or sweating to death. I took a walk this afternoon and guess what?

YEP! I found this penny in the street. As you can see, it's filthy dirty, but that never stopped me before (and won't again). I also took some pictures of things I saw on my walk. I need to break out my bike. Any day now...

Found a Quarter!

Oh happy day! I went to Fresh and Easy today, and while I was checking out, I found this quarter in the change slot at the register! Yay! All of their lanes are self checkout and obviously the last person (or at least a previous customer) fell down on the job of taking their change.

I'm excited! I might just break $10 for the year at this pace. Have you found any money lately?

JACKPOT!

I went to the grocery store today and had to make some copies. I was there several minutes since the first copy I made was useless. I'd put the paper in the wrong spot and had to make another copy to figure out how that particular copier worked. As I was finishing up my copies, I glanced at the coin change machine next to the copy machine. Now, I had been there, like I said, for several minutes and no one else was around.

The tray at the bottom of the coin machine was full of change! I looked around, making sure I was at a grocery store and not a casino! Nope, it was a grocery store. Since I live by the finders keepers, losers weepers motto, I scooped up the change and finished my shopping. Talk about jackpot!

I finished my shopping, checked out, and headed home. The grand total:  $8.42! This is certainly more found money than I'd found all year. Till now, I'd only found $1.22 so this little motherlode brings the grand total to $9.64. Woo hoo!

And no, I'm not going to break down the denominations of the coins like I usually do. I'm a glutton for punishment but I'm not stupid.

Found Penny and Coleman Sandals

I went to Big 5 Sporting Goods today because they had an ad for $14 sandals. That's my kind of price. So, just inside the store, I found this penny on the floor.

And I found these sandals. I didn't even know Coleman made sandals but as often as I buy footwear, that should be no surprise. Anyway, on the other side of the little tag, it reads:  This Coleman footgear is developed to enhance performance and enjoyment of both the great outdoors and everyday life.

Let the enhancement begin!

Hard Hat Harry and a Penny

I had a few visitors the past couple of days. My daughter and grandson stayed over night, and we went to the library then to the grocery store. Right behind the rear tire at the store was this penny.

We watched this Hard Hat Harry, 2 exciting adventures, rescue adventures and police cars! DVD that we got at the library several times. You know how that goes with a 3 year old! Good ol' Hard Hat Harry. Good times.

A Nickel Makes Fifty

Found a coin--a nickel--which makes the fiftieth coin I've found this year!

I went shopping for a new fridge at the Sears Outlet store but didn't see anything I wanted (read:  cheap enough to counteract the $69 delivery fee). I knew I could get a brand new Frigidaire elsewhere for about the same or less with free delivery so decided to hit Fresh and Easy before going home. As I was checking out, I spotted this nickel on the metal rolling bars on the end of the conveyor belt.

Found a Stuck Penny and I Set It Free!

Today as I was walking into Fresh and Easy, I spotted a penny. Stuck in the asphalt. But something I found out today, with the temperature just over 100, is that when it's that hot out, the asphalt, the gooey part, is soft. First I tried to pry it up with my fingernail but it didn't budge but the asphalt did. So, I used my car key and it popped right up. I used a tissue to pick it up and of course it stuck.

Oh well. A found penny is a found penny.

As you can see it's a mess. I think I'll put this penny in a little bag and then put it in my found money jar. And the penny was tails up so I can't read the date on this one.

Sparkling like a diamond in a goat's butt

I was leaving Fry's today, ready to pull out of the parking lot onto the street and what did I see? Yes! This dime!

It was sparkling like a diamond in a goat's butt, as my dad was fond of saying. I thought at first it was stuck to the pavement but I hopped out and picked it right up. Ta da! And it's a mess but good enough for my found money jar! And this poor, sad-looking mess of a dime pushes me over the one dollar mark for found money this year! Woo hoo!

I ventured out in the heat, went to Goodwill (half off) then to the grocery store. I found this old rotary phone at Goodwill (was $4.99, the half off price was $2.49). It's been kid-approved by 2 out of 3 grandchildren. I'm sure it'll be a landslide soon (as soon as the third spies it). It was fun for them to stick those little fingers in the holes and take a spin around the dial. Comments:  It's heavy! I wish it worked.

On the way back in at home, found this penny in almost the same spot as the one earlier this week. Will have to watch that spot. Someone must park right there and toss their pennies, so to speak.

I was checking out today at Fresh and Easy, a little neighborhood grocery store. All of the lanes are self service, so after I scanned my stuff, I ran my credit card and I saw a penny, this penny, sitting in the change dispenser. Yep, I took it.

My finding money opportunities are slim lately. Since it's so hot (107 today in Phoenix), I mostly stay in so I don't melt. I'm looking forward to a few months from now when it cools down and I can ride my bike again.

PO and Big Lots! pennies

Okay, last week I had family visit. We had a great time and drove hundreds of miles:  to Tucson, the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, and Sedona, all around Phoenix. Did I find any money? Heck no. Not a penny. I drove my visitors to the airport yesterday morning so between the four of us, nothing.

But today I ran out to the post office (found 1 penny) then to the library (nothing, well, I found some DVDs and books), to Goodwill because it's half off day (no money though but did buy the dresser scarf in the photo... only 25 cents!), and finally to Big Lots! (1 more penny). Go figure.

The big time!

Okay. I found some money tonight as I was leaving Fresh and Easy. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Fresh and Easy is a neighborhood grocery store chain. I love it. I had been to my son's celebrating my grandkids' birthdays and stopped by because you can get in and out quickly. And they mark down things that have expiration dates of that day or the next. As someone who considers expiration dates as mere suggestions, this is my kind of place.

So, anyway, as I was leaving, on the pavement right in front of the store, there it was!  We're talking big bucks here. A quarter! Woo hoo! It was tail end up. Turns out it is a state quarter. Utah to be exact. Ta da!!!

Another 2 cents

Today at the grocery store I found 2 more cents! Both were face down, so that's how I photographed them once I got home. I found one penny in the store on the floor by the Starbucks and the other in the parking lot by my car.

You know? The found money jar is actually starting to feel heavy!

And while I'm at it, I just wanted to let you know I added a banner to my blog that you can click to help rescue animals. Thanks!

2 cents!

Went to Safeway today. Found 2 cents! Yay! The first one was by the coin machine where you can dump your change in. It was the 2009 penny. Very shiny. I can't believe someone didn't see it before me, but then maybe someone just dropped it. It was one of the new ones with the fancy design. Mr. Lincoln was standing up on the back of it. The Motherlode!

Today I finished a volunteer mediation training program then ran some errands since we got out by 4 p.m. So, I went to the post office to mail my sister's birthday card (sorry, Kay, it's gonna be late) and a book I sold on Amazon. When I was leaving, I spotted a dime on the lobby floor! Woo hoo!

The next stop was the library, which netted some good DVDs and a book but no money. On to the grocery store. I was completely out of cash and picked up a few things. In the parking lot, guess what I found? A NICKEL! Hot dog!

Here's a picture of Scarlett and the dime and nickel on the coffee table. Fifteen cents in one day!!! This is indeed a banner found money day. Better even than the 13-cent day I had in January!

2 Pennies and a Lipstick Bar

Okay, I had to return some books and DVDs to the library and decided to just go ahead and run some errands even though it was almost 100 degrees out. I do have to leave the house between now and September, once in awhile, I guess. So, first I went to Goodwill because it was on the way. That and it was half off day. Half off on all the junk for sale! And I found a penny! And this lovely lipstick bar!

How cool is that? Of course, I only own one tube of lipstick, which I never wear, and this puppy has six slots so I think I'll sell it on Etsy.

Then I went to the library that felt so cool I really kind of hated to walk back to my car even though it was in covered parking so knew it wouldn't be boiling hot. Then I stopped at the grocery store on my way home. Found another penny! Wee doggies!

And both pennies are the new 2010 pennies with the new design on the back with the shield instead of that building. Go figure! What building is that anyway?! Just checked. It's the Lincoln Memorial.

Lucky Penny Day!

Today, May 23 is Lucky Penny Day! I haven't been lucky and found a penny today. Have you?

I'm "borrowing" the following info from the Holiday Insights Web site:

It's Lucky Penny Day. Perhaps a Lucky Penny will be lucky for you today.

Taken at face value, a penny doesn't buy you much, if anything. It used to. During your parents and grandparents days, a penny bought a lot of things. Most notably, Penny Candy got its name because a piece of candy cost a penny. Inflation year after year after year, eroded the penny's value. There has even been some discussion as to whether to discontinue the penny....Heaven forbid!

The penny still serves a very useful purpose...  at least some of them are lucky pennies.  Lucky pennies are found on the ground. Not all of the pennies you find will be lucky. But, it will only take one lucky penny used to scratch off the mega winner on a a scratch-off ticket.

Are you superstitious? Superstition has it that you should only pick up a penny that is lying face up.

Here are some other uses for pennies:
  • A penny for your thoughts.
  • To put your "two cents" in.
  • A necessity for penny pinchers
  • A handy screwdriver when nothing else is available.
~~~
So, it's me again. Are you superstitious? Do you only pick up pennies that are face up? I guess I'm not because to me, they're all fair game.
Happy Lucky Penny Day!
Peggy (and don't call me Penny)
Depressing May... 1 penny
This is sad. All of May I've found 1 penny. Just 1. What is up?!
I know the economy is supposed to be improving but have people also become better at not dropping coins too? Have I been staying in more? Well, yes, it's getting hot in the 'hood. Our first 100-degree day today but I do have to go out later. Ugh. Maybe I'll get lucky and spot a nickle.
Have YOU found any money this month? I mean, May is almost gone. Only 10 days of finding money left in May. How's your money jar looking?
No money pics; hibiscus photo will have to suffice.
Happy May Day!
It is a gorgeous day in the 'hood but the heat is coming so after watching Leatherheads (dirty, dirty George Clooney and John Krasinski, but they looked fine) I made myself get up off the couch and go ride my bike. It was a bit breezy but lovely out. Cool and fresh. So, I was riding home from tooling around up and down side streets, and at 35th and Osborne I spotted this little guy:
He was filthy, dirty, not unlike George and John, but that never stopped me.
In honor of May Day, I took some pictures of the flowering bushes around this place before they droop and melt in the heat. When I was little, on May Day, we would pick flowers that we put in paper baskets we'd made just for the occasion and leave them on old ladies' doorknobs. We'd ring the doorbell and run. Sort of like backwards Halloween. I loved it!
The white flowers are white oleander. Good book. Deadly flower.
The yellow ones, I call yellow trumpet flowers. They grow on bushes. No idea what their real name is. Pretty though!
What a lovely windy, cool day to find a penny
We are having a nice break from the heat today. Yesterday it was 90+ degrees F, today a high of 71! Yes! This is my kind of weather! So, I took advantage and rode my bike to the post office this morning. At 38th and Indian School while waiting to cross the street, I spotted this guy:
A nice shiny penny! It looked much shinier on the sidewalk. I didn't wait to take a picture there; this was taken on the sidewalk in front of my house after I got home. It is really windy here like the rest of the country but that just gave me a better workout, which I need.
Have you found any money lately? I'm going to list all of the found money friends and family have told me about recently. There's a lot of loose change floating around!
U.S. Mint:  No mint mark! I don't recall seeing (not seeing) this before so I had to go look.
Here's what I found at Penny Facts at the Chrissman-Scottman Summer School Web site:  "Denver stamps a "D" on the coin and Philadelphia stamps a "P" on the coin but on the penny leaves it blank. Thus a penny with no mint mark was made in Philadelphia." Who knew? Not me!
New Pennies Found in Change
Not found money that I can count, but I just found these 2 pennies, and I feel like I'm way behind times. I just noticed 2 shiny new pennies in my change yesterday. And these weren't normal new pennies. These are the new Lincoln one-cent design that was launched in February. What rock have I been living under?
Take a look. Not a great picture, but the shield shows in the penny on the left. Lincoln looks the same and has a new 2010 date. But the new pennies are beautiful, even though they feel light, like ramped up Monopoly money if Monopoly dealt in coins.
Have you seen the new penny? What do you think of them?
A Clean Sweep
I was helping my daughter clean her house yesterday. I know, you're jealous! Well, after cleaning the bathroom, sweeping the patio and scrubbing the table out there, vacuuming the air vents, and helping take off the dust ruffle to be washed, I ventured outside to the front of the house.
It was a hot and muggy day, but the carport had a pile of crud that had blown in that I had to sweep up. As I was using the big broom to corral the mess, I heard a tinkle on the concrete. I looked down and saw this penny.
A penny for my efforts! Between that and a hug and kiss from my grandson, all the work was worth it.
Have you ever found money at someone's house and kept it?
BTW, I told my daughter I found this penny and that I was keeping it. She said it was fine. She knows about this blog, and she used to throw pennies away when she little. Shame! Of course she rarely emptied her trash can, so I usually found them, but still.
Party Money
I was on my way to my car this evening to go to a par-tay with some friends, had my glasses off, blowing a speck of dust or pollen or something off of them, put them back on just in time! There was a penny on the ground! Here 'tis:
Library Money
I went to volunteer at Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic today then to the Scottsdale Civic Center Library. They had a couple of movies on hold for me (the first season of The United States of Tara, for one! I can't wait to watch it since I don't have Showtime!). And what did I find? You guessed it. A penny!
This photo is a reenactment. I didn't have my camera handy, so I took this photo when I got home. The penny was tucked almost under a bookcase, tails up). So even though this isn't a "live" shot, it is THE penny.
Grapefruit and a Penny
I was out riding my bike and rode through the drive through lane of a bank. Nothing, just a couple of cars in the ATM lane. Then in front of the drive through, I spotted this penny. As you can see, it's in pretty rough shape with the silver showing through in a few places.
This picture is another re-enactment because the first car pulled out of the drive through lane as I stopped to pick up this sucker. Instead of getting hit or causing a small traffic jam by taking a picture, I scooped it up and went on my way.
Later, I rode by a house with a box that read "Free Grapefruit." So, I stopped and bagged up 6 of those suckers. I love free stuff!
Found a Penny
Went for a walk today with two of my grandkids. Saw some chickens. Smelled some flowering bushes. Picked an orange blossom just to see what it looked like. Watched a waterfall in an overflow reservoir. Found a penny.
Happy New Year, 2024 and So Long, 2023
Well, here we are. The end of another year. I think this will be the end of my found money blog. I think it's run its course, but I'...
